Blog Entry 5- Project 1: Research

Levi Van Veluw

Levi uses the actual look of people but uses shapes and texture.  It says on the website that "the awkward silence and dark colour suggest uncomfortable underlying tensions and emotions. The endless repetition of wooden blocks stands for van Veluw’s attempts to gain control of his own position within the familial structure." This relates to me because family is one of the most important things in my life.  He also has a series on landscapes and this is where he did a self portrait and added elements of nature.  I believe that this is to show how man and nature work together.  The outdoors are also very important in my life. Many of my memories are with my family fishing and being outdoors.

Jerry Uelsmann

Jerry incorporated a lot of physical features as well as elements of nature into his pieces.  He also used black and white which blends all the images together and doesn't make one thing stand out.  It is hard to tell what he means by each of he pieces and this keeps the viewer looking and asking questions.  I want people to ask questions about my work and use their imagination rather than just see a piece and move on to something else.  One piece that stood out to me was the face in the path of trees.  It is difficult to come up with something that Jerry wants me to know about this piece.  All of his work is interesting.
